  • About the IBEW

Since the union’s founding in 1891, the IBEW members have been on the front lines powering the future of North America’s electrified economy, embracing craftsmanship and enabling new technologies to reach homes, businesses and industries every day. Representing roughly 880,000 active and retired members, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, affiliated with the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and the Canadian Labor Congress (CLC), is one of the strongest labor unions in the world.

With members in both the United States and Canada, the IBEW stands out among North America’s unions as one of the largest in size and because it represents members across such a broad range of skilled occupations, including inside/outside construction, manufacturing, industrial production, utilities, broadcasting, telecommunications, railroads, government and municipality work and more.

IBEW members are safer and stronger at work because of the power of collectively bargained contracts, industry-leading training and a commitment to excellence on and off the job.

    OBJECTIVES OF THE IBEW

To organize all workers in the entire electrical industry in the United States and Canada, including all those in public utilities and electrical manufacturing, into local unions.

To promote reasonable methods of work.

To cultivate feelings of friendship among those of our industry.

To settle all disputes between employers and employees by arbitration (if possible).

To assist each other in sickness or distress.

    To secure employment.

To reduce the hours of daily labor.

To secure adequate pay for our work.

To seek a higher and higher standard of living.

To seek security for the individual.

And by legal and proper means to elevate the moral, intellectual and social conditions of our members, their families and dependents, in the interest of a higher standard of citizenship.
